Cape May was known as Cape Island in 1844 when writers/historians Barber & Howe published their book, Historical Collections of New Jersey, that year.  The book included many black and white etchings like this one.

This view shows two of the original hotels, which were architecturally plain, simple 2-story boxes that faced the ocean.  The small houses behind them were often rented out to guests during the summer season.

This piece, painted on a modern raised panel with a whitewash border, measures 14" x 8.5".  The painted image measures 11" x 5.5".
